Holy Wednesday Service of Confession and Forgiveness | April 16
Welcome Trinity Family and Friends!
This day was formerly called “Spy Wednesday,” an allusion to the gospel accounts in which Judas is identified as the betrayer of Jesus. This Holy Wednesday is used as day of preparation for the Triduum, or Three Holy Days. We prepare our hearts with a service of confession and forgiveness. As Jesus endured the suffering of the cross, we are called to run the race of life with perseverance, confident of the joy to come. In the Three Days, which begin tomorrow evening, we will journey with Christ from darkness to light, from captivity to freedom, from death to life.

Readings:
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a - The first readings for Passion Sunday, the weekdays in Holy Week, and Good Friday are the four “Servant Songs” from Isaiah. It is unclear whom the author intended this servant to be – the king, the prophet, or the whole nation, and the passages certainly outline the ministry God intended for Israel. To Christian ears the suffering, redemptive figure of the Servant points to Jesus.
Psalm 70 - This psalm expresses the ultimate confidence of the Servant in the first reading, and our own.
Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3 - The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians who were growing weary of following Christ into service and rejection. This section follows a lengthy reminder of the Old Testament figures who suffered for the faith.
Gospel: John 13:21-32 - Like those on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the Gospel readings for the weekdays in Holy Week are stories from John, culminating with his enthronement on the cross. Today’s story immediately follows that of Jesus washing the disciples feet at the Last Supper, and immediately precedes his giving the new commandment: that they love one another. We will hear both of those passages tomorrow night.
