David Allen Ghrist, Sr.

December 16, 1946 + August 22, 2026

Rest eternal grant him, O Lord;

and let light perpetual shine upon him.

David Allen Ghrist Sr., 79, of Latrobe, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2026, at home.

Born December 16, 1946, in Greensburg, he was the son of the late William Harrison Ghrist and Sylvia Irene (Croushore) Ghrist.

David was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he volunteered in many capacities. He prepared meals in the kitchen for a variety of events, including the Meals on Wheels program. David also was an integral part of the special annual Christmas Basket program. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served with the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Security Agency and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 515.

Prior to his retirement, David was employed at Anacomp, Inc. An avid fisherman, David also enjoyed hunting, camping, and traveling. He was an excellent handyman who loved the challenge of fixing things – working on cars and machines were a specialty of his. Those who knew him would agree that he was a patient and generous man. Above all, David was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

David is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lillian (Thomas) Ghrist; his three children, David Ghrist Jr. (Shelly) of Kansas City, KS, Jennifer Dick (Kenneth) of New Stanton, and Kathleen Hilton (Michael) of Bowdon, GA; 10 grandchildren, Kyle Ghrist (Michelle), Joshua Ghrist, Katelyn Pfeifer (Edward), Kenneth “Bobby” Dick II, Karalyn Vogel (Zack), Kristopher Dick, Corey Sheret (Chelsea), Stephan Sheret, Jordan Sheret, and Lily Hilton; eight great-grandchildren, Felicity, Mason, Vivi, Aubrey, Oliver, Madalyn, Sophie, and Ellie; two brothers, Thomas Ghrist (Corby) of Latrobe and William Ghrist (M.J.) of Marietta, SC; one sister, Janet Blair, of Heflin, AL; he is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Duncan.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Medi Home Hospice Care, especially R. James, Blaise, and Tammy, for all of the kind and compassionate care they provided.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, LLC, 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Latrobe. Interment will follow at Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont, where military services will be accorded by the VFW Post No. 33, Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 331 Weldon Street, Latrobe, PA 15650.
